Professor YoungJoon Byun of the CSIT department had a surprisingly fun summer. YoungJoon went to the Yellow Stone National Park for the first time, and he realized there was so much more to Idaho than the delicious potatoes it’s famous for. While amazed by Idaho’s natural beauty, YoungJoon drove there from California to work on a project known as the “CPUC Project”.

CSUMB is overseeing the development of an integrated tool using several open source network testing tools such as NDT, iPerf, and ping. YoungJoon and his teammates are developing the tool for Android-based smartphones and Windows-based laptops. Initially, they plan to use the tool to measure the coverage of 4 major service providers (Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile) in California. Eventually, the goal is to make their tool available to the public so that the users in California can do independent testing of their provider network and upload their results to a central database. The database will provide information about each provider and display the results so that people will be able to see what the actual coverage is for that provider. This project is sponsored by the CPUC (California Public Utilities Commission) and thus is known as the “CPUC Project”.

Eric Chavez

Web Administrator
Monterey Superior Courts

Eric is currently the web and data base administrator for the Monterey superior courts. He is in charge of maintaining public websites in addition to managing databases, programming, and staying up to date with the latest technology. While his work can be demanding Eric believes that his education at ITCD prepared him for the work he is doing today. After earning his B.S. in TMAC he had the opportunity to work for CSUMB as a web administrator for three years.

His work experience and his education at CSUMB and have given him the skills necessary to accomplish the different tasks he has been trained to do. Eric credits courses such as media tools and C++ because they gave him confidence and allowed him to develop the basic skills that are necessary to work effectively in the world of technology.

Capstone: To all the students currently working on their Capstone projects Eric’s advice is to, “always work on a project that you enjoy through out your education because the field work you will find will always be similar to your capstone project”.

His advice for current students: “Don’t just do the work that is assigned to you in class, go beyond the projects and the expectations and always have a side project. Always stay up to date on what you need to know.”

A lot of students are surprised that we are ranked so high comparing to other university campuses.
